Walter Reeks: an Extraordinary Man

The life of Walter Reeks, Australia’s first full-time naval architect has been rediscovered by maritime historians, David Payne, and Nicole Mays.

Born in the UK, Reeks arrived in Australia in 1885 having sailed solo from Liverpool aboard the Lancaster Castle. He had served a six-year apprentice with George Inman, builder of many famous 19th century British yachts, and arrived fully equipped with skills in boat building and a knowledge of science, engineering, and the arts.

Highly respected, Reeks was noted for his innovative designs of commercial and recreational vessels, including skiffs, racing yachts and steamers. In the 1890s he was commissioned by the Balmain New Ferry Co. Ltd to design their double-ended, screw-propelled ferryboats.

In 1889, he married Mary Kent and moved into his newly built house Twynam, overlooking Mosman Bay where he lived until 1925. In 1895, Mary passed away leaving him to care for a son, Kent, and daughter, Thelma. Tragedy struck in 1914 when Kent was murdered while visiting the UK.

Payne and Mays detailed research, driven by their deep respect for Reeks has resulted in a fascinating book which tells his story, both professional and personal, revealing a fascinating and adventurous man leaving you wanting to know more.
