Hidden Gems: Mosman Faces stories

Not all artists achieve fame within their lifetime or have their work collected by the major art galleries. However, the work they created to make a living, or because they were driven to create may, overtime, take on a new meaning and a new significance.

Hidden Gems, celebrating the annual Australian Heritage Festival, features local artists, of whom we know extraordinarily little. The aim of the exhibition is to share what is known, in the hope visitors may be able to fill in the gaps and share what they know.

On view will be works by Ada Carlill, Violet Bartlett, along with paintings of Mosman landmarks by Marcel Leman, Charles Dingwall, Mary Grosvenor Gillham, and others, most have been donated to the local studies collection with minimal background information.

We will also share the story of Katherine Adams, who was discovered when we exhibited pieces of Taronga Zoo souvenir pottery in an exhibition on Taronga Zoo. In the 1990s these souvenir pieces had been incorrectly attributed, and with the help of her descendants we were able to learn more about Adams.

Free exhibition, on view Friday 24 April to Monday 18 May, library open hours.
