"Paper Emperors" Author Evening with Sally Young
Sally Young, Professor of Political Science at the University of Melbourne, will speak at Barry O’Keefe Library on Monday 1 April about her new book Paper Emperors: the rise of Australia’s newspaper empires, published by NewSouth Books.
Before newspapers were ravaged by the digital age, they were a powerful force, especially in Australia- a country of newspaper giants and kingmakers. This magisterial book reveals who owned Australia’s newspapers and how they used to them wield political power.
Spanning 140 years and beginning in 1803 with Australia’s first newspaper owner- a convict- right through to household names even now: Murdoch, Fairfax, Syme, Packer, it shows how newspaper owners influenced policy-making, lobbied politicians and shaped internal party politics.
Books for purchase and signing available on the night.
