Learn Sculptural Basketry with Catriona Pollard

Random Weave

In this half-day workshop you will learn the ancient basketry technique of Random Weaving which has been used since the beginning of humanity. You will have the opportunity to transform ordinary natural found objects into something extraordinary.

Using the natural fibre of Bangalow Palm inflorescence (seedpods) you will weave a sculptural form. By the end of the experience, you will have a sculptural basket and a deeper understanding of the wonderful art of weaving and your own creativity.

Plant material will be provided but workshop participants are encouraged to bring some Bangalow Palm inflorescence that has been dampened a few hours before the workshop. While this is not essential, working with material that you have found yourself can be an important part of the process. Bangalow Palm inflorescence can be found in the coastal suburbs of Sydney. If you are unsure what Bangalow Palm inflorescence look like, a website image search will assist you.
