Going The Distance At The Spit: 100 Years of the Spit Amateur Swimming Club 1917-2017
Mosman Library Service is celebrating the centenary of The Spit Amateur Swimming Club. Established in 1917 at the Spit Baths, Middle Harbour with only 23 members, the club continues today at Balmoral Baths. Famous members included Forbes Carlile, Murray Rose, Sam Herford, Gergaynia Beckett, Brett Hill, Sue Knight and Noeline Maclean – champions who helped change the face of swimming in Australia.
This commemorative exhibition includes personal memorabilia, medals, trophies, costumes, clothing, pennants and programs dating back to the 1920s. Also on view are photographs, ephemera and records from the Spit Amateur Swimming Club archives and the Mosman Local Studies Collection.
This exhibition is a celebration of local champions but also of those volunteers who enable community clubs to continue to thrive and survive.
